Bowel Cancer Screening - with haemoccult 35.00 0.00
details
print the details of this service

At present, there is no completely reliable way of screening for this common malignancy. However, screening for signs of hidden bleeding with a simple stool test can sometimes pick up the presence of benign polyps in the bowel before they become cancerous (this process can take 5-7 years).

Annual testing with haemoccult in patients over 40 can help to identify polyps.

Patients with a strong family history should be screened with a colonoscopy.

Any patient who notices any overt bleeding or has a change of bowel habit or who develops abdominal pain that persists should report these symptoms to a doctor for further investigation.

print the details of this service
Well Man screening is designed especially to detect disorders that are most likely to affect men and women during their adult lives and focuses on these conditions.

These well man checks are the equivalent of the annual health check (which we call healthplan - for registered patients, and which is included within the annual subscription.)

The well man screen lasts 40-60 minutes. All the tests are carried out by one of our doctors or by the doctor and practice nurse, where appropriate. There is time for the patient to raise and discuss any concerns.

Once all the results are correlated we send a full written report.

Well Man Check
A full physical examination with a detailed assessment of heart function with an electrocardiogram and a detailed assessment of lung function with computer aided spirometry. The examination also includes for men over 45 a prostate examination.  We also check a urine sample for signs of any kidney problems and this allows us to screen for diabetes.

A fasting blood sample is taken to check cholesterol level in both men and women. This test, together with the results of the physical examination, allows us to calculate a 10 year prediction of cardiovascular risk.

In men over 45, we also take a blood sample for PSA (prostate specific antigen). The level of PSA rises with the development of prostate cancer and this test, together with the physical examination, allows for the early detection of this condition.

Finally we give patients a kit to test stool samples for any hidden bleeding, as a screening test for bowel cancer. This kit is returned to us at the practice once completed – 3 separate samples are required. For effective bowel cancer screening this test should be repeated annually.
