This can be particularly helpful for employers who are concerned about an employee's sickness record or concern that the work environment is having a deleterious effect on an employee's health

24 hour ambulatory blood pressure assessment. This is helpful to monitor a patient's blood pressure during the course of a normal day and night, either to assess whether blood pressure treatment is indicated (if there is doubt following it's measurement during a consulation) or to review if treatment that is being given, is effective.

This can be arranged to identify those patients who are developing an aneurysm of their abdominal aorta. This is a swelling of a very major artery and can lead to a sudden severe haemorrhage leading sometimes to sudden death.

It is more common in those who have high blood pressure or who smoke, and occurs more frequently in men. It is unlikely to develop under the age of 55 years. This abdominal ultrasound scan can usually also assess the appearance of the liver, gall bladder, pancreas, kidneys and spleen.

At present, there is no completely reliable way of screening for this common malignancy. However, screening for signs of hidden bleeding with a simple stool test can sometimes pick up the presence of benign polyps in the bowel before they become cancerous (this process can take 5-7 years).

Annual testing with haemoccult in patients over 40 can help to identify polyps.

Patients with a strong family history should be screened with a colonoscopy.

Any patient who notices any overt bleeding or has a change of bowel habit or who develops abdominal pain that persists should report these symptoms to a doctor for further investigation.

The Practice has a computerised programme available for the quantitative assessment of heart disease risk. The coronary heart disease risk assessment test includes a blood pressure check, a review of lifestyle, and a fasting blood test for cholesterol estimation and blood sugar.

The Practice can check for drug and alcohol misuse with a blood and urine test. The urine sample does need to be produced under observation.

The Electrocardiogram (otherwise known as ECG) will be taken at rest. It can pick up abnormalities including heart disease. These can include problems with the rhythm of  the heart and also any change in size or any strain of the heart muscle. The ECG is a snapshot of heart function and cannot detect all forms of heart disease.

Executive Health Screening is the equivalent of the annual HealthPlan Plus check for registered patients.

This entitles patients to a detailed health check, plus a comprehensive blood test, providing a more detailed assessment of an individuals haematology and biochemistry, together with a vision and hearing test. The test lasts 90 minutes.

The hearing test  is an assessment available at the Practice for anyone concerned about possible hearing loss. A hearing test (Audiogram) can assess hearing levels, particularly relevant where there has been past or current exposure to loud noise.

The Helicobacter Pylori is an organism found in the stomach; it is associated with irritation and ulceration of the stomach and duodenum and may be linked with the later development of stomach cancer. 

A simple test enables patients who harbour the Helicobacter Pylori infection to be identified and a simple course of treatment will eradicate it. Anyone may have this test, but it is suggested for those who suffer from recurrent indigestion, heartburn or nausea.

HIV Testing is available at our surgery in Salisbury. The results of the HIV tests are available immediately, although we send a blood  sample for analysis for confirmatory analysis.

HIV is only one infection that maybe of concern. It is generally advised that patients with sexual health worries undergo screening for other sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea, chlamydia and hepatitis B and C. The tests are sent to a laboratory for analysis. 

All tests can be anonymised.

All women enter a national breast screening programme, for the early detection of breast cancer, from the age of 50 to 65, with three-yearly breast screening. 

Any woman who wishes to be screened separately from this programme may have a mammogram. Although there is no upper age limit for this, it is not recommended under the age of 40 years as mammography in younger women is difficult to interpret.

Cancer of the ovary is the fifth commonest malignancy in women and remains difficult to diagnose in the early stages. However, ultrasound screening of the ovaries is available to identify any unusual enlargement. The ovarian ultrasound scan can also routinely assess the appearance of the uterus. This scan, plus a blood test, can help in the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Pre-employment Health Checks range from £110 to £175.00

These are company medical examinations in which the doctor acts as an agent of the prospective employer, and usually lasts 30 minutes. The examination will be carried out by a doctor who has not previously looked after the patient. A report will be submitted to the company in an agreed format. Where problems are found the company will be advised (following discussion with the patient) and permission sought for any follow-up investigations.

Female Infertility

At least one in six couples have difficulty conceiving. The Practice is able to offer a fertility screening test by way of a blood test that checks the progesterone levels to check for satisfactory ovulation in women (we also check for a man's fertility, see Seminal Analysis for Male Fertility).

Male Infertility

At least one in six couples have difficulty conceiving. There is increasing concern that sperm counts in men may be falling and this reduction could affect fertility. The Practice is able to offer a fertility screening test for men and can also check with a blood test for satisfactory ovulation in women (see Progesterone Level for Female Fertility).

Spirometry is a detailed lung function assessment. We have the most up to date computer aided spirometry.

These lung function tests are designed to assess the flow of air through the lungs. Abnormalities of flow can reflect the effects of smoking and pollution as well as airway disease.

The most common cancer in young men is cancer of the testis, although this type of cancer may occur later in a man's life also. Examination of the testis will normally be adequate to exclude this condition, but for those men who wish additional reassurance, ultrasound examination is available.

The urological ultrasound is a screening examination that assesses the structural health of the kidneys, bladder and prostate. At the same time as the ultrasound, a flow rate measures the rate of urine flow and the quantity of urine after micturition (passing urine). These are useful as an assessment in any man who is concerned about a change in his urinary function.

Vision is of vital importance and regulations require that personnel using VDU equipment have satisfactory vision for this purpose. This test assesses this together with near vision, distance vision, night vision, colour vision and peripheral vision.
