Sexual Health
Sexually transmitted infections (STDs) have increased rapidly in recent years and regular sreening should be undertaken by every responsible young person. Many infections, such as Chlamydia, may have no symptoms and can cause infertility in later life or chronic problems such as prostatitis. Fortunately most STDs can be treated with simple antibiotics, but only after appropriate screening.
Many patients have concerns about contracting a sexually transmitted disease including HIV and Hepatis B and Hepatitis C, but may be reluctant to seek advice and screening for these conditions. We are happy to do this for any patient whether registered at the practice or not.
Such screening remains entirely confidential and can be anonymised.
It is important that these conditions, if contracted, are diagnosed as soon as possible as life expectancy can usually be normal with approprate treatment.
We can provide on the spot HIV testing with an immediate result - although such tests would normally be combined with further laboratory testing for this, together with Hepatitis B and C screening. On the spot HIV test is an additional cost - as indicated in the list of charges.
